How has Italy’s most ritualistically built one fared in our generation of deconstructed desserts? Pretty correctly, really: it looks like tiramisu is everywhere proper now. And no wonder — the closing put-up-pasta choose-me-up is even higher than the sum of its independently stellar components. Here’s where to discover London’s excellent examples, from trad slabs to frozen renderings.
Not to be confused with an ombré tiramisu, Ombra’s tiramisu is a genre classic. Silky-easy mascarpone, optimally soaked sponge, and a generous topping of grated chocolate: multiple bites will flip the Hackney canalside into a Venetian bacaro.
“Like the bow of the Titanic,” one diner became moved to comment after Brawn’s tiramisu arrived at the desk. Elegant yet lavish — like everything else on the menu right here — it supplements the standard dusting of cocoa with finely grated darkish chocolate. The mascarpone layer is gorgeously golden and custardy—one for sophisticates.
It might not be as ludicrous because the lemon meringue pie has as many layers as the lasagne, but Gloria’s tiramisu continues to be more excellent. Rising from its lovely ceramic field like a soufflé, it’s all billowing drifts of mascarpone and whisper-light sponge.
As the whole lot served at Lambs Conduit Street’s liked and venerable trattoria, resident since 1983, the tiramisu right here is made with love and served without frills: Homemade sponge hands, zabaglione, and espresso cream, plus amaretto, and bittersweet cocoa powder come collectively within the happiest of unions. Forking through the layers on one of the door tables on a sunny day is challenging.
